Expert on Europe

I have collaborated with PUBLICO (Portugal) to contribute to a live interview and a piece on "What to know before applying for a research grant". I have also done training with Media Players International (Tim Grout-Smith and Lily Poberezhskaare - two very experienced ex-BBC journalists) on how to publicise my research in non-specialised media.

Catarina M. Liberato is a PhD candidate at the School of Politics and International Relations (SPIR) of the University of Kent (United Kingdom), since September 2020. Her scientific interests focus on topics such as Foreign Policy, European Affairs, and Brexit through a mixed-methods approach. Mainly, her PhD project is dedicated to British Foreign Policy construction in the Brexit context, under the supervision of Professor Richard G. Whitman, Dr Miriam Sorace, and Dr Philip Cunliffe. Mainly, she aims not only to produce knowledge on how ideas emerge in the political environment but also how they manage to travel within the British political elite, disentangling the role of ideas in foreign policy delineation. ​ Before joining the University of Kent, Catarina spent two years working in diplomatic services and the business environment. In 2018, she completed a master’s degree in History, International Relations and Cooperation from the University of Porto (Portugal), with the dissertation “Brexit: Portrayal of Implications on the Security and Defence of the European Union”. Additionally, she has already published studies on the Great War and Portuguese Foreign Policy during this period. ​ Catarina is a member of the Global Europe Centre (GEC), the Conflict Analysis Research Centre (CARC), and the Comparative Politics Group (CPG) of the School of Politics and IR at Kent. She enjoys contributing actively to the academic community by engaging with issues of scientific diplomacy, including as a member of PARSUK (Portuguese Association of Researchers and Students in the UK) and as Vice Deputy Director and Editor at the Kent Consortium for World Affairs (KCWA).
