JCMS Open Competition

2028 Special Issues

Open Competition for the 2028 Special Issues

Applications are invited for the guest editorships of two special issue of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS), to appear in Spring and Autumn 2028. Completion of the issues will be required in mid-2027.

Proposal Requirements

Proposals should be for 8-14 articles (including editorial overview and original articles).

Proposals may come from new or more established scholars, and contributions co-written between scholars and practitioners are welcome. The proposal should include a clear account of the research question, a schedule of work, the names of proposed or confirmed contributors and provisional titles. Proposals should be concise and be no longer than 1000 words. They should not be under consideration by another journal.

Please additionally include full abstracts (250 words per paper) and abbreviated CVs of prospective authors (these do not count towards the 1000 words). Proposers need to indicate how far advanced the project is and whether any papers exist in draft versions.

In drafting the Special Issue proposal, please consult the Editorial Note in Volume 60, Issue 6, as well as previous special issues published in the Journal for information about editorial priorities.

Submission Process and Deadline

The deadline for the submission of proposals for both 2028 Special Issues to the JCMS Editorial Team ([email protected]) is 3 July 2026.

JCMS editors will then consider proposals and draw on expertise from the Editorial Advisory Board where appropriate. The Editorial Office will inform the successful teams as soon as possible. Please email the editors (at the email addresses below) if you have any questions.

Responsibilities of Guest Editors

The successful guest editor(s) will be expected to take on the full editorial task (using the Journal’s Research Exchange manuscript management system) up until the handover to copy editors, including finding reviewers and managing any consequent revisions.

Article Length Guidelines

Articles must not exceed 8500 words (inclusive of footnotes, appendices included in the text of the article, and figures, tables or charts, but excluding the reference list and abstract) and should normally be over 6500 words, especially if no tables, figures or charts are included with the text.

Workshop and Timeline

The successful teams of applicants will be expected to organise a manuscript workshop in 2026 to discuss drafts of the papers, for which co-funding of up to £2000 is available. At least one editor will attend the workshop, if possible.

After the workshops, manuscripts must be reviewed according to rigorous JCMS standards in time to be passed to the JCMS editors for final approval. Proposers and authors should be aware that this is a tight timetable to manage.

Selection and Enquiries

The decision of the Selection Panel, which is constituted of the Editors, is final. There is no appeal. Prior communication with members of the panel accords no advantage.

Any further enquiries may be addressed to the Editors-in-Chief:
Paul James Cardwell ([email protected]); Roberta Guerrina ([email protected]); and Gabriel Siles-Brügge ([email protected])
