European ‘war fatigue’ may be growing – but Ukraine’s recent momentum could buy time
Benjamin Martill and Adam Holesch explore how European support for Ukraine is showing signs of “war fatigue” as the conflict’s economic costs, duration and uncertain outcome test public patience. The authors argue that this has not yet produced a decisive political break: mainstream parties largely continue to support Kyiv, while opposition remains fragmented. Ukraine’s recent battlefield momentum could therefore be crucial, restoring confidence in the possibility of success and giving European leaders more time to sustain the coalition behind continued support.

Health Bill needs stronger scrutiny over NHS accountability and patient choice
Dr Mary Guy, UK health policy and law expert from Trinity College Dublin, has submitted evidence to Parliament on the Health Bill, arguing it amounts to a “top‑down reorganisation” of the NHS on the scale of the 2012 reforms. She warns that abolishing NHS England and shifting functions to the Secretary of State and Integrated Care Boards risks blurring ministerial accountability unless the law is clarified.
She calls for the Secretary of State’s statutory duty to explicitly include social care, and for an updated NHS Constitution reflecting 2026 realities. Her submission stresses that structural barriers – such as transport and digital access – must be addressed if patient choice is to be meaningful.

UACES Treasurer Charlotte Galpin Interview with the BBC
UACES Treasurer Charlotte Galpin, Associate Professor in German and European Politics at the University of Birmingham, was recently interviewed by the BBC for an article examining the sharp rise in abuse faced by local councillors across the UK.
Drawing on her research, Charlotte highlights how political abuse has intensified in recent years, becoming increasingly anti‑democratic and dehumanising, with racialised individuals and women facing the most severe forms. She also points to the role played by media ecosystems and social media platforms, where outrage and abuse are amplified and monetised, contributing to a political environment that normalises hostility and intimidation.

How to Balance Funding Priorities with the Conditions that Allow Research to Thrive
In his latest post on the UACES blog, Simon Usherwood, Professor of Politics and International Studies at The Open University and former Chair of UACES, reflects on a growing discussion across the academic community: how to balance funding priorities with the conditions that allow research to thrive.
Drawing on his own experience, Simon argues that supportive research environments are just as important as targeted funding. He highlights the role of networks, collaboration and academic exchange in sustaining high-quality research, and why these elements should not be overlooked in broader debates about research support.
This timely piece contributes to ongoing conversations about how best to support researchers and strengthen the foundations of academic work across the sector.

New Publication from Evgeny Romanovskiy
We are pleased to highlight a new peer‑reviewed article by Evgeny Romanovskiy, published in European View. His research explores how “Europe” and “European values” are debated, contested and selectively appropriated within North Caucasus regional and diaspora contexts.
The article offers a nuanced examination of identity, Europeanisation beyond the EU’s formal borders and the transnational political narratives that shape how different communities engage with the idea of Europe. It provides an insightful contribution to wider discussions on how European norms and meanings travel, adapt and take on new significance outside the EU.
