Sport & EU 18th Annual Conference

Conference

We are extremely glad to announce that the Sport&EU Board ratified the host city for the 18th annual conference. Angers will be the selected place for this next event of the European association, that unites scholars and practitioners interested in the relationship between sport and the EU and promotes comparative and interdisciplinary research on sport, Europe, and the European Union.

The Sport&EU 18th annual conference will take place at ESSCA School of Management in Angers, France, on 25 and 26 June 2024. The organizing committee is now open to receiving proposals for individual papers and pre-composed panels.

The chair of the local organising committee and long-standing Sport&EU member, Professor Albrecht Sonntag, commented on the organisation of the conference: “We are delighted to welcome the Sport&EU conference back at ESSCA School of Management in Angers. All the more so as 2024 seems like a timely moment to hold the conference in France, a few months only after the Rugby World Cup and only some weeks before the Paris Olympics. We would like to seize this opportunity to put issues of sport diplomacy, peace, and human rights in the foreground. But we remain of course very attentive to all the other topics addressed by Sport&EU’s increasingly vibrant research community that has succeeded in consolidating sport on the EU studies agenda. Au revoir à Angers!”

The honorary chair of Sport&EU, Professor Richard Parrish, commented: “We are really happy to return to Angers, where we hosted our 10th anniversary conference. With 2024 being a year full of sport events, and also European elections, we are sure we will have an excellent conference in which to debate the pending sports law cases and the latest developments in EU Sport Policy. We are really thankful to ESSCA School of Management for their enthusiastic application to host our annual flagship event”.

The deadline to submit your proposals is 31 January 2024, decisions on accepted papers and panels will be made no later than 28 February 2024.

As each year, the Sport&EU conference strives to have a distinctly multi-disciplinary character. Papers are invited to cover a wide variety of priority areas:

The three pillars of EU Sport Policy:

· Economic impact of sport

· Social inclusion in and through sport (inc. issues of diversity and equality)

· Sport integrity (incl. governance, management and business issues)

With regards to recent and current developments of international sport:

· Sport and Peace / Sport and Development / Sport and Human Rights

· Opportunities and limits in (European) sport diplomacy (incl. sanctions)

· Sports mega-events: bidding processes and hosting challenges

· Specific issues concerning the Paris Olympics or the Euro2024 in Germany

· Environmental sustainability in sport

· Gender perspectives, feminist and queer theories in sport

And, of course, a list of traditional Sport&EU topics:

· Legal issues in European sport and the impact on sport of recent rulings of the CJEU

· EU sport policy design and implementation

· Physical activity and physical exercise: EU achievements

For the 2024 conference delegates will have the opportunity to present two types of papers:

· Short 10’ papers:
floating new ideas, commenting on cases, seeking feedback at early stages of work, etc.

· Full 20’ papers:
More elaborate papers of academic nature, including research objectives, methods, results and discussion.

Please indicate in your abstract what format you wish to adopt.

Paper proposals (both short and full) will be reviewed by a Scientific Committee of the Sport&EU Association.
