UACES Members Awarded Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship

More information below

We are delighted to announce that six of our members — Emeritus Professor Christopher Hill, Professor Gabriel Siles-Brügge, Professor Helena Farrand Carrapico, Professor Paul James Cardwell, Professor Roberta Guerrina, and Professor Toni Haastrup — have been awarded Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) Fellowships.

This prestigious recognition is given to individuals who have made a distinguished and impactful contribution to the social sciences through their research, teaching, professional practice, or policy engagement.

Last year, UACES invited our members to nominate themselves or other deserving individuals for the AcSS Fellowship. As a learned society, UACES had the privilege of putting forward nominations, offering an exclusive opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of our community. The nominations were reviewed by the UACES Committee before being submitted to the AcSS, whose Nominations Committee made the final selections.

We are especially proud all three UACES nominees have been awarded this honour. Their work has significantly advanced the field, contributing to both academic scholarship and real-world impact. This recognition reflects their dedication and the high regard in which they are held by their peers.

Our Nominated 2025 AcSS Fellows

Professor Gabriel Siles-Brügge

Professor Gabriel Siles-Brügge is a distinguished political economist focusing on global governance and public policy with an emphasis on international trade. A Professor in Global Governance and Public Policy at the University of Bristol, he is one of the Editors-in-Chief of the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, the leading publication in European Studies and serves on the Editorial Boards of Policy & Politics and Bristol University Press, demonstrating his sustained leadership in advancing academic discourse in the social sciences.

Commenting on this recognition, Gabriel said, “It is truly an honour to be joining the Academy of Social Sciences, especially alongside my fellow Journal of Common Market Studies editors with whom it has been an immense joy to work. I am immensely proud to call myself a social scientist - and am therefore thrilled to be able to contribute to the work of the Academy in singing the praises of the complex insights, nuance and social engagement the social sciences have to offer”. Of his nomination through UACES, he further noted, “UACES has always felt like such an important home for me in all of these respects, and so it means a lot to me to have our work in promoting European Studies recognised in this way”.

Professor Paul James Cardwell

Professor Paul James Cardwell is a distinguished interdisciplinary scholar specialising in EU law and policy, particularly the EU’s external relations. With over 100 publications, he is recognised as a leading expert in the field, with notable contributions to migration, sanctions policy, and Brexit. His Brexit-related work has extended his impact beyond academia, featuring prominently in media and public discourse.

Of this recognition, Paul expressed his delight at joining the Academy as Fellow: “I look forward to promoting the role and value of the social sciences within my disciplines of Law and European Studies. UACES has been a key part of my own academic journey, as a member, elected committee member, treasurer and now co-editor of the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies. I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me, and proud of the work we have done in supporting and promoting European Studies as a social science in some very challenging times”.

Professor Roberta Guerrina

Professor Roberta Guerrina is a distinguished scholar in international politics, renowned for her contributions to the study of gender and European Union (EU) studies. She is currently Professor of Politics at the University of Bristol’s School of Sociology, Politics, and International Studies and serves as one of the Editors-in-Chief of the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies. As a member of several editorial boards, she helps shape critical debates in international relations, public policy, and gender politics.

“I am deeply honoured to be awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences” commented Roberta. “I am also grateful to all the trailblazers from traditionally under-represented groups who paved the way for a more inclusive academy and research landscape. Their work provided opportunities for a more diverse set of voices to contribute to social sciences and, in so doing, improved our understanding social, political and economic relations. I am looking forward to building on their work and contribute to the work of academy in the future”.
