Prof. Toni Haastrup joined the University of Stirling in July 2019 as Senior Lecturer in International Politics. Prof. Toni Haastrup is a graduate of the University of California, Davis (BA), the University of Cape Town.

Prof. Haastrup's research broadly explores the nature of global power hierarchies (between the Global North and South) in knowledge and practice. Prof. Haastrup has worked in the area of global governance of security via regional security institutions - the African and European Unions. A part of Prof. Haastrup's current research agenda draws on critical feminisms to understand the foreign policy practices of both institutions.

Prof. Haastrup has published on the relationship between the two institutions, including her monograph, Charting Transformation through Security: Contemporary-EU Africa Relations (Palgrave, 2013) and published in several leading international journals including Journal of European Integration, JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Feminist Journal of Politics, International Negotiation among many others.

Prof. Haastrup has also taught extensively on international organisations, the politics of European security, crisis in Europe, feminist themes in international politics and on contemporary global security challenges broadly.

Until June 2022, Prof. Haastrup was Editor-in-Chief of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies. Prof Haastrup is an executive committee member of Women Also Know Stuff, and an academic coordinator of the Jean Monnet Action, Diversity, Inclusion and Multidisciplinarity in European Studies (DIMES - https://www.uaces.org/dimes) Prof. Haastrup is also co-convene the UACES Research Networks, Gendering EU Studies [https://tinyurl.com/5bjc6866] and EU as International Mediator [https://www.uaces.org/networks/europe-international-mediator]

Prof. Haastrup has worked with a number of international organisations and governments like the World Bank, the European Union, Irish and Canadian Governments. In 2020, Prof. Haastrup was invited to lend her expertise to the drafting of the Women, Peace and Security - Humanitarian Action Compact [https://wpshacompact.org/]. Prof. Haastrup currently serves as the signatory focal point for Stirling.

Prof. Haastrup is an occasional media commentator on topics including the African Union, EU relations with Africa; feminist foreign policy; Brexit, and the women, peace and security agenda.

Prof. Haastrup has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards, including the 2024 Emma Goldman Award, honouring substantial contribution engagement and future potential. Supporting new knowledge on feminist and inequality issues in Europe, and other distinctions as an inspirational figure and established scholar in the fields of teaching and research.
