European Politics Presents: Ireland’s Relationship to the European Union

Book launch

Join UACES and Manchester University Press for the launch of 'European Politics presents: Ireland’s relationship to the EU'.

This event will discuss two new publications as part of Manchester University Press’ prestigious European Politics Series; Ireland and the European Union: economic, political and social crises (Holmes & Simpson Eds. 2021) and Capitalising on Constraint: Bailout Politics in Eurozone Countries (Moury, Ladi, Cardoso & Gago 2021).

Ireland and the European Union; economic, political and social crises is a new book which examines how Ireland’s relationship with the EU was affected by a succession of crises – the financial crisis, the Brexit crisis and the migration crisis – in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The book provides a summary of the main features of each of the crises to be considered, from both the EU and the Irish perspective.

It is the first volume of its kind to provide a comprehensive analysis on British-Irish relations in the context of Brexit. It assesses the Withdrawal Agreement and Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, the devolution settlement and the 1998 Agreement, as well as the European dimension to Northern Ireland’s peace process.

Capitalising on Constraint: Bailout Politics in Eurozone Countries is an essential analysis of what really happens behind closed doors during and after a bailout. This book explores the constraints on national executives in the five bailed out countries of the Eurozone during and beyond the crisis, from 2008 to 2019. The authors argue that despite international market pressure and creditors' conditionality, governments had some room for manoeuvre during a bailout and were able to advocate, resist, shape or roll back some of the policies demanded by external actors. Under certain circumstances, domestic actors were also able to exploit the constraint of conditionality to their own advantage.

In this virtual event, editor Dr Kathryn Simpson will be in conversation with Dr Catherine Moury. The event will be chaired by Prof John O'Brennan (Maynooth University) The panel will then take questions from the audience.
