EUROPE AND SPORT: What now and next?

Conference

2023 Annual Conference

We are extremely glad to announce that the Sport&EU Board ratified the host city for the 17th annual conference. Lisbon will be the selected place for this next event of the European association, that unites scholars and practitioners interested in the relationship between sport and the EU and promotes comparative and interdisciplinary research on sport, Europe, and the European Union.

The goal will be to gather in Portugal, in July 2023, a wide network of people, from within Europe and outside, interested in these areas and promote dialogue and research through the staging of the conference. The commitment is to support the development of new generations of academics, researchers and practitioners, including PhD students and those at an early stage of their career.

Vera Pedragosa, the local coordinator of the conference said on the decision to take the event to the Universidade Autonoma de Lisboa: "Portugal is a privileged place where policies to promote sport and physical activity in line with the European Union countries are concentrated. We recognise the social, economic and integrity benefits of sport.  Sport is more than sport, it provokes emotion and mobility between countries that promote economies, tourism and diversity. It is an honour to host this conference and discuss the challenges of sport today and tomorrow in a European approach”.

Rui Alexandre Jesus, the Portuguese Member of the Sport&EU Board, comments:“Sport and the European Union has been a constant topic in evolution for many years. Several matters have aroused recently, new perspectives about old questions also emerged, and the debate about how the European nations should and must handle common issues, is as important as ever. In July 2023 we hope that all the attendees of the Conference can give their contribution to the challenges that will be addressed.”

Borja García, Sport&EU Executive Director said: “We are extremely glad to be taking our annual Sport&EU conference to Portugal and to Lisbon. We thank Rui Alexandre Jesus and the team at Universidade Autonoma de Lisboa for their enthusiasm and their commitment to our conference. I am sure we will have an excellent event in Lisbon next July, with plenty of EU and sport discussions.”

Call for Papers

Sport&EU annual conference will take place in 2023 on 6-7 July at Universidade Autonoma de Lisboa, Portugal. The organising committee welcomes now Papers and Panels proposals.

We invite Sport&EU members to submit paper and/or panel proposals that analyse the three broad pillars of EU Sport Policy as defined in the current work plan: Economic impact of sport; Social inclusion in and through sport; Sport integrity.

Contributions from diverse disciplines (law, politics, social sciences, philosophy etc.) are accepted. Papers with an interdisciplinary background are particularly encouraged.

Topic priority areas for your proposals

We have identified the following topic priority areas for your proposals, although others will be also considered:

  • EU sport policy design and implementation
  • Legal issues in European sport
  • The recent rulings of the CJEU and their impact on sports law, policy and governance
  • Sports business and sport management: integrity problems
  • Equality and diversity in and through sport
  • Technology in sport: challenges and risks
  • Environmental sustainability in sport
  • Olympic movement’s current path
  • Sports Events and tourism: present and future
  • Professions in sport: the differences inside EU
  • Physical activity and physical exercise: EU achievements

For the 2023 conference, delegates will have the opportunity to present two types of papers:

  • Short 10’ papers: presenting new ideas, comments on cases, early work, etc. (These papers might be fundamentally empirical, with authors seeking feedback on early analysis, possible follow up or theoretical contribution);
  • Full 20’ papers: These should be more elaborate papers and appropriate to an academic context. It is expected that authors include aims, methods, result and discussion.

Paper proposals (both short and full) will be reviewed by a Scientific Committee of the Sport&EU Association.

The best full papers will be submitted for publication in the International Sport Law Journal (https://link.springer.com/journal/40318) a peer-reviewed journal of extreme high level, quality indexed in highly appreciated databases such as Scopus, EBSCO, ProQuest, SCImago etc.;

Another opportunity for publication will be the Journal of Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy, which will work in partnership with Sport&EU.

Following our traditional policies of equality and diversity, Sport&EU encourages PhD students and young career academics to submit their proposals for this conference. Equally, we specially encourage female and non-binary academics to submit their proposals. Papers with a gender perspective or a feminist/queer theoretical framework are welcome. For panel proposals, please note that all-male panels will not be accepted.
