After Brexit: the UK, the EU, the European neighbourhood, and beyond

Workshop

Workshop for Early Career Researchers

21 June 2023, Møller Institute, Churchill College, Cambridge

This workshop provides an occasion for early career researchers to present theoretical, conceptual or empirical work examining the political, legal and economic impact of Brexit on the UK and the home nations, the EU, its member states, neighbouring states, and other third countries.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The effects on the UK constitution: How Brexit has affected executive-legislative relations, the devolved settlement, territorial politics, and institutions in the UK and/or in one of more of the four home nations
  • UK trade and the economy, UK policy, policy making and regulation, and UK diplomacy after Brexit
  • EU-UK relations, including the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, and the politics of the relationship
  • The prospects for cooperation in energy, climate change, foreign policy, and security and defence, and for friction (e.g. data and digital, financial services, environment)
  • The impact of Brexit on EU institutions, decision making, policy, and regulation
  • Adaptation by the EU, member states and neighbouring countries to the UK’s departure, their approaches to EU-UK relations, and the bilateral relations of European states with the UK

UKICE is keen to widen its network of early career researchers. To this end, this workshop is planned as part of a series bringing together younger and more experienced scholars to discuss new research on Brexit. Younger scholars stand to benefit from participating in networks in their area of expertise, whilst also profiting from the opportunities that collaboration with UKICE will provide to achieve greater impact for their research. Participants will have the opportunity to share and present their work and receive feedback from senior academics working in the field of European studies. The workshop will provide a forum to explore possibilities for further collaboration, and to forge links to disseminate and publicise your research with us. We are able to support travel, subsistence, and overnight accommodation for successful applicants.

Researchers, who may be PhD students, post-docs, or researchers who completed their PhD on or after 31 December 2017, are invited to send an abstract of no more than 300 words together with their name, affiliation, and two-page CV, which should include academic record to date (degrees taken, publications, prizes, etc). Please send applications by email to Dr Pippa Lacey, lwtn.ppl@uea.ac.uk to arrive no later than Friday 31 March midnight GMT.

The workshop is convened by UKICE Senior Fellows and Professors Catherine Barnard, University of Cambridge, Hussein Kassim, University of East Anglia, and Simon Usherwood, The Open University. For queries about the call, please contact Professor Hussein Kassim (h.kassim@uea.ac.uk).
