Centre-Periphery Relations as an Emerging Cleavage in European Politics & Policy-Making?

Berlin, Germany
27-28 September 2013

This conference will be organised on behalf of the UACES Collaborative Research Network The EU-27 Single Market in the Global Economy. It addresses the potential of an emerging centre-periphery cleavage under the current crisis conditions in the Eurozone, which may threaten the cohesion of the European Union as a whole. It will also examine the strategies in the periphery and core countries and at supranational level to overcome potential divisions within the EU. Papers should address relevant issues of EU politics and perspectives from core and less advanced peripheral economies. We welcome paper proposals in any of the following areas:

  • The evolvement of the centre-periphery cleavage in the EU
  • Supranational strategies to deal with the centre-periphery cleavage
  • Varieties of capitalism reflecting issues of centre-periphery in the EU
  • The representation and perception of the Eurozone crisis in core and peripheral economies and societies
  • Conflicts between net contributors and net receivers in the EU
  • The Europe 2020 strategy, the Fiscal Compact and national sovereignty
