Biography
My research focuses on the interactions between policy change (direction and extent) and shocks to policy making systems. Under this broad research agenda, I'm pursuing two different, yet related areas of inquiries: First, policy dismantling in the European Union, and how calls for Better Regulation, more subsidiarity and cutting 'EU red tape' are linked to efforts to further integrate or disintegrate the EU. This work looks in particular at environmental policy in the EU from the early 1990s to nowadays, the role of key (former) Member States such as the UK and of the European Commission. Second, Post-Brexit policy and governance of the environment in the UK. I am a founding co-chair of Brexit & Environment, a network of academic experts analysing how Brexit is affecting the environment. As part of this network, I am most interested in the governance gaps arising from the UK's departure from the EU and the challenges addressing these gaps create for a devolved UK. My work in this area looks especially at environment & agricultural policy development, the special case of Northern Ireland and the development of common frameworks.
