Biography
Maaike Geuens is an assistant professor in Constitutional and Administrative law at Tilburg University with the Public Law and Governance Department. She also coordinates the Moot Court course "Oefenrechtbank" in the Bachelor of Law. She obtained her PhD in 2021 which focused on the European Citizens’ Initiative and its impact on the democratic functioning of the European Union. In February 2023 she will start as a guest lecturer on European Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp. She previously worked at the High Council for Small and Medium-sized Companies (Belgian Federal Government) as a legal counsel, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the University of Antwerp and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she conducted research in European law and comparative constitutional law and taught legal methodology. She is a member of the Centre for Direct Democracy Studies, University of Białystok. She was on a three month research stay at the University of Graz, Austria, in 2016 and was a visiting fellow at the Institute for European Studies in 2018.
