UACES and Wiley invite applications for the role of Editors of the JCMS Annual Review.

The Annual Review, produced in association with JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, covers the key developments in the European Union, its member states, and acceding/applicant countries. The Annual Review:

  • Includes specially commissioned articles;

  • Contains analytical articles and keynote contributions written by leading experts in their respective fields covering political, economic and legal issues;

  • Is the most up‐to‐date and authoritative source of information for those engaged in teaching and research or who are simply interested in the European Union;

  • Includes an invaluable guide to EU documents and publications ‐ and the various websites of the EU ‐ together with a chronology of key events.

The Annual Review is published as an issue of JCMS and therefore has very wide, global circulation online. It is also available for purchase as a self‐standing book. The full table of contents of the most recent edition can be viewed at The content of the Annual Review varies from year to year to reflect ongoing developments inside and outside the EU and to maximise its impact.

The incoming JCMS editors and the UACES committee are looking to strengthen the links between UACES, the JCMS and the JCMS Annual Review going forwards.

Editorial Tasks and Qualities Required

The Editor(s) are required to:

  • Identify and subsequently invite contributors;

  • Receive and edit drafts from contributors, returning them where corrections or improvements are necessary;

  • Write the editorial;

  • Oversee the accurate compilation of the Chronology;

  • Collect final drafts before sending them on to the Copy Editor;

  • With the contributors, check proofs, before collating the final copy (in April).

Qualities required of the successful applicant;

  • Sound judgement in selecting appropriate contributors ‐ if the invited contributions are not of the desired standard, major revisions may become the responsibility of the Editor(s);

  • Tenacity to ensure that all contributors meet the necessary deadlines as the timescale for each stage depends on all contributions being punctual;

  • A diligent and meticulous approach to check for exactitude, omissions, overlap, word‐length;

  • A strong commitment to developing the Annual Review as a vital research and information tool for all those working in the European studies field.

  • A willingness to work closely with UACES and the incoming editors of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies.

The successful applicants will be offered a 3-year contract, commencing with The Annual Review of the European Union in 2017, which would be published in September 2018. The contract will include a 1-year probationary period, as well as an option to extend the 3-year contract by a further 3 years subject to mutual agreement. A Memorandum of Understanding will be agreed between the Annual Review Editor(s) and UACES. The Annual Review Editor(s) will be responsible:

  • for the contents of the Annual Review and for its timely delivery to Wiley;

  • to the Editors of JCMS for Annual Review page budgets and for general matters of policy concerning the Annual Review and JCMS.

The UACES Committee of Trustees has overall responsibility for the strategic development of JCMS and the Annual Review and will make their appointment after advice from the current and incoming JCMS editors.

The budget of the JCMS Editors includes an honorarium for the Editor(s) and contributors of the Annual Review. This budget also includes generous provision for certain expenses.
