Funding
In recent years there have been 28 scholarships* on offer to students resident in the United Kingdom. In August 2009 a decision was made by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to withdraw its funding of places at the College of Europe.
Fortunately, subsequent to a campaign to restore funding, a partial reprieve for scholarships was granted for the 2010 -2011 academic year and 11 scholarships were re-instated. The situation regarding funding in future years, including 2011-2012, is currently the subject of an internal UK government review. Information concerning the outcome of the review will be made available here as soon as it becomes known. Information will also be circulated via the Euro Research email list. Please visit: www.euro-research.eu if you would like to join the mailing list
* 1). Of these, 22 scholarships were made available to UK nationals resident in England as well as eligible EU nationals currently resident in the United Kingdom. The remaining scholarships were funded by the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland (1 scholarship), Scotland (3 scholarships) and Wales (2 scholarships) for UK nationals resident within their respective territorial jurisdictions.
2). The value of each scholarship has covered the tuition fee (currently €14,000) and board and lodgings (currently up to €7000 for Bruges and €5000 for Natolin). Scholarships have been awarded to applicants, the allocation being determined by the UK Selection Committee, based on the written application and performance at interview.
Application procedure - information purposes only
The submission of applications is via the College of Europe AND the UK Selection Committee.
In previous years, applicants have been required to fill in an online application on the College of Europe’s website. Following this, they have been required to send on two printed copies of their application: one to the College of Europe and the second to UACES.
Once the applications have been received and processed, short-listed applicants have been called for interview by the Selection Board of the UK Selection Committee. Those who are not short-listed or put on a reserve list have also been be notified.
Interviews for short-listed students have usually been held in London in March. The Selection Board of the UK Selection Committee is comprised of academics many of whom teach at the College of Europe. Interviews usually last around 15-20 minutes, and cover the motivation of the student, the main topics they want to study and current affairs questions. A short oral test in French has also been included.
