Call for UACES Collaborative Research Networks

UACES’ core function is to promote the exchange of ideas on Europe. In addition to our existing publications, conferences, workshops and other activities, we wish to invite proposals from the UACES membership to establish collaborative research networks (CRNs). Successful networks will receive up to £5,000 over a three year period.

The deadline for the next round of applications is Monday 1 February 2010.

Submissions should be sent to: admin@uaces.org

What to include in your proposal

Proposals must set out a clear plan for the intended three year funding period, and contain a signed commitment by the authorised representative of a suitable venue to host any intended CRN events other than those at the UACES Annual Conference.

Proposals must also include the following information:
  • Name, position and email address of intended network co-ordinator (s);
  • Area of research activity, including the intellectual rationale for establishing a CRN in this field (300-500 words);
  • List of intended members of the network, with a clear indication regarding who has already agreed to participate;
  • A statement of the CRN’s intended activities and outputs, together with targets;
  • A commitment towards establishing a web presence* for the network;
  • A budget for the three year funding period, including an annual budget for each year of activity; (networks are usually expected to begin in the Spring following the deadline).
  • A commitment from the intended co-ordinator of the CRN or suitable Higher Education Institution (HEI) officer to administer the financial aspects of the network;
  • Signed commitment by the authorised representative of a suitable venue to host any intended CRN events
  •

    Please note: UACES will NOT contribute towards administrative overheads (e.g. staff costs) so please do not include these in your budgets. This funding is for things such as travel expenses, catering, web domain registration etc.

    * Web presence: if your University will not host a website for you, consider using something like http://sites.google.com which is free to use. A domain name can be obtained for less than £10 GBP / year from providers such as http://joker.com/. As well as traditional publishing in Journals and presenting papers at conferences, you can also disseminate research results and get feedback by blogging on sites such as http://ideasoneurope.eu/.

    Eligibility

  • UACES CRNs must be proposed by an individual member of UACES who works at a recognised HEI and would act as the CRN co-ordinator in the event of a successful application;
  • CRNs should ideally bring together established and early career researchers, but post-graduate members are not eligible to be proposers of a CRN;
  • CRNs may bring together academics and policy-makers;
  • CRNs may include relevant people who are not UACES members, but CRN coordinators will be expected to promote the inclusion of UACES members in their CRN.
  • Funding duration

    UACES CRNs will be funded for a maximum period of three years.

    Funding for years 2 and 3 is subject to successful completion of the first year. Success criteria is based on the objectives set out in your original proposal and a progress report submitted to, and approved by, the UACES committee.

    Funding for 'inactive' networks will be re-allocated to new networks.

    The aim is for CRNs to become self-funding by the end of the three-year UACES funding period. It is unlikely that a CRN would be funded for more than one three-year term.

    Application process

    The deadline for the next round of applications is Monday 1 February 2010.

    Submissions should be sent to: admin@uaces.org

    Applications are considered by a panel composed of members of the UACES committee.

    Preference will be given to networks which bring together scholars from a variety of approaches and/or disciplines, including where appropriate beyond the social sciences and humanities, in keeping with UACES’ mission.
