UACES Mailing List (JISCMAIL)

Joining the UACES Members' Email List enables you to contact other UACES members with a single email, as well as to receive emails from other members.

Who is eligible to join?

Any Individual or Student member of UACES is welcome to join the email list. In addition, an unlimited number of staff or students in a Department which holds Corporate membership is also eligible to join.

Who can send messages to the email list?

Any person who is eligible and has joined the email list can send messages.

UACES will not send messages on your behalf. Any replies to messages posted to the email list go directly to the person who sent the original message.

What can be sent to the email list?

The email list is an excellent resource for:
  • Letting people know about upcoming conferences and other major events

  • Advertising job vacancies for positions in European Studies and related disciplines

  • Circulating calls for papers
  • What cannot be sent to the email list?

  • Political messages

  • Messages which are for commercial purposes

  • Advertisements for courses

  • Advertisements for books (Members' books may be promoted in UACES News or on this website)

  • Requests for a job vacancy

  • Information on the change of institution and contact details for a particular individual

  • Requests for support for charitable causes

  • Regular emails about a series of lectures / seminars (please send just once, with a weblink for colleagues to find future events)
  • Attachments

It is not possible to circulate attachments on the email list. This is a security measure to prevent the spread of viruses. To get around this, you will need to copy and paste the contents of any attachments into the body of your email.

    Student Forum email list

Postgraduate research students are also encouraged to join the EuroResearch email list which is administered by the UACES Student Forum. This list is of particular relevance to students, and includes information on:

  • Summer Schools Conferences for postgraduates

  • Student Forum activities

  • Scholarship opportunities

  • Any student may join the EuroResearch email list, including those who are not members of UACES.

    Join the UACES Members' list

Step 1: Email the following command to uaces-request@jiscmail.ac.uk.

join uaces firstname lastname University/Institution Department

For example: join uaces John Smith Oxford Politics

Step 2: You will be sent an email confirming that you have been added to the list - this response is not automated so there will be a time delay.

    Receive Emails Weekly (optional)

Step 1: Let UACES know that instead of receiving emails as and when they are circulated, you prefer to receive the weekly index (Email admin@uaces.org)

Step 2: Registering a password. You will be sent an email every Tuesday, showing the titles and senders of emails circulated during the previous week to the UACES list. To access the full email you will need to have a password. A guide on creating a password can be found at: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/using/passwords.htm.

Step 3 (if you lose your password) There is no way to get a password reminder, however when registering a new password it overwrites the old password.

    Send a Message

Once you have received confirmation that you have successfully joined the email list, you can start sending messages.

Simply send an email (with no attachments) to uaces@jiscmail.ac.uk.

Your message will immediately be posted to every member on the email list, so it is not necessary to preface your email with any other comments.

    Search the Archives

You can find again any email that has been circulated on the list since 1999 (!) by simply searching the Archives. Please see: www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/uaces.html

Suspend yourself temporarily from the list

You should suspend yourself from the list before setting up any automatic 'out of office' message. Some email systems get trapped in a loop which will generate an endless number of emails that will clog up your Inbox and that of everyone else on the list.

To temporarily suspend yourself from the email list whilst you are away, send the following command to jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk.

    set * nomail
    --

The two dashes (--) typed on the next line down indicate that this is the end of the command.

    Rejoin the list

To rejoin the list, send the following command to jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk

    set * mail
    --

The two dashes (--) typed on the next line down indicate that this is the end of the command. You will then be automatically rejoined to the list that you suspended yourself from.

    Leave the list permanently

To cease your membership of the list, send the following command to jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk.

    leave uaces
