European Policies Research Centre

University of Strathclyde

The European Policies Research Centre (EPRC) has extensive competence and experience in comparative research on regional problems and policies in Europe and on the evaluation of Structural Funds programmes and projects within the EU, as well as a wide range of other regional policy and regional planning studies.

As an independent research institute based within the Business School of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, EPRC has specialised in regional and industrial development in Europe for over 30 years and provides research expertise for both public and private organisations across a range of policy areas - regional, economic, labour market, innovation and environmental - covering all the countries of the EU27 and neighbouring states.

Directed by Professor Douglas Yuill and Professor John Bachtler, EPRC has an interdisciplinary staff of 16 who specialise in economics, geography, public policy, planning and law, and who collectively have linguistic expertise in English, Czech, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Welsh. EPRC operates from Glasgow and has alliances with partner institutes throughout Europe. Its extensive research portfolio consists of four main programmes:

  • Regional development and regional policy in Europe: national policies for regional economic development; regional governance and economic development; regional innovation policies and cluster strategies; economic restructuring, regional development and regional policy in the new Member States;

  • EU Cohesion policy: the negotiation and design of EU Cohesion policy; the planning, management, implementation and evaluation of Structural and Cohesion Funds programmes and strategies for regional economic development;

  • European territorial development: the contribution of EU policies to territorial cohesion; studies of inter-regional, cross-border and transnational programmes;

  • Competition policy and subsidy discipline: State aid control policies under the EC and EEA Treaties and the Europe Agreements.

EPRC's research portfolio spans all the countries of Western, Central and Eastern Europe, involving research at European, national and regional scales. It includes studies of 'cross-cutting' policy issues such as gender equality and sustainable development, and research on aspects of the policy-making process such as strategy development, programme management and policy evaluation.
