The European Institute is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 has ranked the European Institute as the top ranking of all UK institutions that submitted European Studies research to the RAE when research was looked at on a grade point average. It classified 20 per cent of the Institute's research as 'world leading' and 45 per cent as 'internationally excellent'. It was one of five departments at LSE to be ranked top in their field. The achievement was all the more significant as it is the first time that the European Institute has made an independent submission.
