Head of Department of Political Science
The IHS is an institution for research and post-graduate training under private law. The Department of Political Science is one of three IHS departments. It offers a three-year postgraduate program and currently conducts advanced basic research aiming to grasp the logic of multi-level politics in Europe. Employing a comparative perspective, it seeks to understand theoretically and empirically how domestic and EU-level political processes interact and what the increasing linkage between both levels means for the functioning of governance in Europe.
Candidates must have a profound and diversified knowledge of political science, high standards in political science methodology, strong interdisciplinary research skills, professional experience in externally funded research as well as teaching, organizational skills and the ability to work in a team, excellent contacts to other European research institutions. They should have achieved habilitation or hold equivalent qualifications.
Scope of duties and salary are comparable to those of a tenured professor. The employment will be for a fixed term of four years, starting in September 2010. An extension of the contract is possible and even customary. Interested applicants should submit their applications with all pertinent documents to the Director’s office. Suitable candidates will be invited to present a paper.

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ is a renowned centre of expertise in the field of international relations. It conducts research and develops courses and training programmes. One of the Institute’s four thematic programmes is the Clingendael European Studies Programme (CESP). CESP develops and disseminates topical expertise on the European Union and EU policies. Its research focuses on the political and administrative development of the European Union, on specific policy fields such as Justice and Home Affairs, economics, agriculture and external relations, and on the position of the Netherlands in the European Union. The training programmes are specifically geared to EU policy issues and/or competences for professionals dealing with the European Union.
Per 1st December 2009, CESP will have the following vacancy:
(Senior) Research Fellow m/f
36 hours per week (fulltime)
Job description

Conducts and publishes academic research in the field of the European Union, and answers questions from the media

Participates in research projects covering his/her own field of expertise within CESP and/or other Clingendael Programmes

Develops and organises training programmes, seminars and conferences

Gives lectures and presentations

Maintains national and international contacts within the framework of his/her own field of expertise
-
Will be available for other activities at the Institute.
Qualifications and experience
-
Academic qualifications and activities in the area of the EU, supported by a Doctoral degree and/or other publications
-
Broad interest in and knowledge of EU policies and the functioning of the EU’s political and administrative system
-
Experience in project-based policy-relevant research
-
Experience in developing and conducting training programmes, preferably for multinational audiences
-
Extensive teaching experience and excellent presentation skills
-
Relevant national and international networks, in particular within the European institutions
-
Proficiency in English, both oral and written
-
A minimum of five years of relevant working experience
-
A creative and entrepreneurial personality with a flexible and commercial attitude.

Your role will be supporting the European Safety Policy Manager to inform, influence and develop our policy relating to European railway safety.
A gifted networker, you’ll be able to use your communication skills to build positive working relationships with our stakeholders. You’ll also be able to prepare fluent and persuasive written work, identifying key issues in complex situations to inform sound policy development.
Whilst you don’t need to be fluent, some experience of a European language would be beneficial. You’ll also have had some exposure to the development of policy proposals.
