Coinciding with the December European Council and our 50th anniversary, UACES is hosting a round-table discussion reflecting upon the Future of Europe.

Panelists will share their views and reflections on the scenarios laid out by the Commission's White Paper on the Future of Europe in March, and President Juncker's preferences for a defence union, a more centralised economic and monetary union under a social Europe as delineated in the State of the Union address to the European Parliament.

Many of the Future of Europe plans are not new, but are rather reiterations of ambitions scattered across 60 years of European integration history. Panelists will consider why these plans re-emerge, and whether conditions for their success are now better than in the past, or whether they are likely to fail once again. The Future of Europe proposals come at a time of convulsion in Europe. They aim to tackle rising euroscepticism and populism and address those convulsions, however, do they risk stoking the fire of euroscepticism further? Do Juncker's plans sufficiently address the underlying root causes of popular dissatisfaction with the European project (inequality, impact of financial crisis)?

Join us for what promises to be a lively and interesting discussion of the important issues facing the European Union in 2017. We look forward to seeing you there.
