Getting to Passau

  • General Information

    If you are flying, the most convenient airports for Passau are Munich Airport, Nuremberg Airport and perhaps Linz Airport (Austria).

    Avoid Memmingen Airport, sometimes call Munich West Airport.

    If you are travelling by train you should visit www.bahn.com for train times, fares and to book tickets.

    The train station in Passau is 1km from the main conference venue (a 15 minute walk). The city centre and many of the hotels (not all) will be closer.

    If you are driving, let us know, and we will put you in contact with the University who can advise you about parking.

  • Munich Airport (Franz Josef Strauß Airport)

    The best-served airport in the region and relatively easy onward connections to Passau.

    If you were hoping to join the Sunday afternoon walking tour of Passau, you would need to be landing before 10:30 in order to arrive in time.

    Onward Travel from Munich Airport

    To get to Passau, catch the airport bus from the terminal to the nearby town of Freising (do NOT go into central Munich). The bus takes you to the train station at Freising where it connects with the trains to Passau.

    You can buy a ticket to Freising on the bus, or even better, buy a Bayern Ticket in advance as it covers both the bus and the train.

    The bus (route No. 635) departs every 20 minutes from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, with a journey time of 20 minutes. Freising train station is the last stop, so you can’t go too far.

    There are direct trains from Freising to Passau which a journey time of about 1 hour 50 minutes. There is usually a train every hour, and they usually depart from Platform 4. If you are using a Bayern Ticket you can use the Regional Express (RE) trains, but not the Inter-City Express (ICE) trains.

    The last train to Passau leaves Freising at 23:49.

  • Nuremberg Airport

    Onward Travel from Nuremberg Airport

    To get to Passau, take the U2 subway line from the airport station to Nuremberg’s main station (direction Nürnberg Röthenbach).

    Tickets for the subway can be purchased at the station or online. For more information visit www.vgn.de.

    At the main station, you can take an Inter-City Express train direct to Passau in 2 hours. There is usually a train every 2 hours.

    The last direct train to Passau leaves Nuremberg at 20:31.

  • Linz Airport (Blue Danube Airport, Austria)

    There are not many flights into Linz, but this is a viable option for Passau if there is a flight that suits you.

    Onward Travel from Linz Airport

    To get to Passau, take the 601 bus to Linz station. The bus fare is €2.70. The bus takes about 20 minutes to reach Linz station. A timetable and further information on the bus can be found here.

    From Linz station you can take the train direct to Passau. The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes. There is usually a train every hour.

    The last train to Passau leaves Linz at 21:55.

  • Frankfurt Airport

    The busiest airport in Germany, but not as conveniently located as Munich Airport.

    Onward Travel from Frankfurt Airport

    There are direct trains from the train station at the airport to Passau, but the journey time is about 4 hours 40 minutes and the trains are infrequent.

  • Memmingen Airport

    Do NOT fly into this airport. Sometimes described by Ry#nair as Munich West, the onward connections to Passau are problematic.

  • Travelling by Train

    You can reach Passau by train from these cities (amongst others):

    Amsterdam (8.5 hours, change at Frankfurt Airport)

    Berlin (8 hours, change at Nuremberg)

    Brussels (8 hours, change at Frankfurt)

    Budapest (6 hours, change at Linz)

    Prague (6 hours, change at Nuremberg)

    Paris (9 hours, change at Frankfurt)

    Vienna (2.5 hours, direct train)

  • Bayern Ticket

    The cheapest way to travel around regional Germany is with a Deutsche Bahn ‘Länder-Ticket’ – for Passau choose the Bayern(Bavaria) Ticket.

    These can be booked in advance from www.bahn.com or purchased on the day of travel. More information…

    The Bayern Ticket can be used on RE trains, but not ICE trains.
