EU Integration and the Albanian State-nation Constellation in the Balkans

Gezim Krasniqi, University of Edinburgh

This paper discusses the Albanian state-nation constellation in the Balkans in the light of the European Union (EU) integration process. As a multistate nation, Albanians live as majorities in the independent and sovereign state of Albania and in the contested state of Kosovo and are minorities in Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro. This newly emerged socio-political reality has resulted in a complex state-nation constellation, which in turn is seen as being in accordance with the EU integration project. Thus, the paper sets to assess the effects of the complex, and often incongruent, process of state-building and democratisation in the region and the 'enlargement fatigue' on the relationship between the EU integration project and the Albanian state-nation constellation in the Balkans.
