Chinese Media in the EU and Sino-EU Relations

Jing Men, College of Europe

Sino-EU relations are affected by many factors including politics, economics, culture, history and society. The promotion of bilateral relations not only relies on the contact and exchanges of state leaders and politicians, but more on people to people contact. How the Chinese people perceive and understand the European Union will have a direct impact on the development of Sino-EU relations. In recent years, more and more Chinese journalists have been sent to Brussels to follow the day-to-day business and report to Chinese people. Currently, the group of Chinese journalists in Brussels becomes the largest, even in comparison with the journalists of EU member states. This is a new phenomenon which is worth studying. What are the objectives of these journalists in their report of European Union? What are the subjects that they are interested in? What are the impacts of their reports in China? To answer these questions, this paper will first give an introduction to the strengthened presence of Chinese media in Brussels and the government policy behind it. Then, the paper will examine subjects covered by Chinese journalists and analyze the reasons why these subjects have been selected and reported. Thirdly, the paper will examine the impact of Chinese media on Sino-EU relations. The paper will try to find out whether it is important to have more media coverage on the EU, and if yes, in which areas media reports enjoy more influence.
