The Irish Left and the Financial Crisis

Andy Storey, University College Dublin

Ireland is one of the Eurozone member states that has been most heavily affected by the Financial Crisis. The country's government has adopted and implemented some of the harshest austerity policies of any member state to respond to pressure and demands from markets, the EU and other international institutions. This paper assesses how the country's political parties and other influential organizations to the left of Irelands political spectrum have framed the national discourse, and analyses the developed and demanded alternative policy strategies advocated and introduced into the countries national debate.
