Perspectives and Limits of the Baltic LNG Hub
Slawomir Raszewski, University of Leeds
The primary research question of the paper consists in analysing regional energy markets, which may benefit from emerging LNG supplies to create a liquid gas trading point that would serve the region and beyond. The EU's competition policy in gas markets allowed an emergence of new trading hubs. and the Baltic States with Finland plan to establish an LNG hub. However, due to the limited gas demand in the region, the price dynamic might be unfavorable. hence, LNG would be priced at UK hub with an additional price premium. This would create an additional market risk for the LNG supplies. In turn, higher reliance on Russian pipeline gas would then be possible. The paper will also analyse a possibility of a hub in Poland, which will include the Baltic States. By bringing together the latest empirical data the project is expected to contribute to the debate on the internal energy market and possibilities of diversification of gas markets.
