The Role of Europe in the Arab Revolutions

Angelos Sepos, Al Akhawayn University

The paper draws from theories of revolution and democratization and seeks to examine the role of Europe in the Arab Revolutions. By employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches, it seeks to examine the role and policies of EU institutions, Member States and subnational actors in contributing to the 2011 events in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria Morocco and Bahrain and seeks to understand the different origins, processes and outcomes of these events. Europe's influence is assessed by drawing from both theories of power and Europeanization. Ultimately, the paper aims to contribute to our broader understanding of the role of international actors in revolutionary and democratization phenomena.
