The neighbouring countries of the European Union have over time become more deeply integrated with the internal market, and they have developed or are developing a certain degree of institutionalisation of their relationship with the EU. The conference will discuss these 'privileged partnerships' which face similar institutional challenges, ranging from the UK's future partnership with the EU to Switzerland's institutional umbrella agreement for its many bilateral agreements, the framework association of the three small-sized countries located within the EU's customs territory, and Turkey's quest for a modernisation of its (partial) customs union. Moreover, the 'benchmark' of the European Economic Area has in recent years undergone an extensive review process.
The conference aims to draw lessons regarding 'privileged partnerships' between the European Union and its neighbours. It is organised by the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe with the support of the Swiss Mission to the EU.
Participation is free of charge, but prior online registration is required.
