Europeanisation of Violence or Violent Europeanisation? A Serbian Example
Marija Krstic
After the democratic changes in 2000, the official goal of the Republic of Serbia's foreign policy is to enter the European Union. In 2005, National Assembly accepted the Resolution on joining European Union and at the end of 2009 Serbia submitted its candidacy for the EU membership. In this paper, I draw on a wide range of sources from anthropology of violence and European studies. The aim of the paper is to examine a process of Europeanisation of the Republic of Serbia (which also includes better prevented violence problems in the country) within the scope of the relationship among the violence, power and culture concepts. In this respect, I understand Europeanisation as a process of adaptation of local (Serbian) institutions to European norms, standards, rules and institutional structures. I question whether Europeanisation imposes a sort of violence. Violence is usually defined within anthropology of violence literature as 'excessive use of force'. Therefore, I study does power to impose certain values (to enter EU) correlates with existing ideas of European values and culture.
