Competition is the engine of both the market system and European integration. Integration and competition favour each other. Furthermore, EMU depends on a more competitive European policy. Unfortunately, competition in the EU is still hindered by many obstacles, and the required structural reforms are slow to materialize. The Lisbon strategy in general and the competition policy in particular are the best instruments to complete the SEM, and promote productivity and European competitiveness.
