The European Union and International Regimes:
 Effective Multilateralism in Action?

The workshop will aim to explore the relationship between the EU and international regimes in the context of ideas about international governance and multilateralism, using a series of case studies. In particular, it will focus on:

• The EU’s general approach to the establishment, maintenance or modification of key international regimes, with particular reference to concepts of multilateralism and governance.
• The EU’s capacity to exercise power over or within key regimes.
• The EU’s behaviour in relation to negotiations within key regimes; bargaining and/or problem-solving.
• The impact of institutional factors on the EU’s relationship to key regimes, taking account of institutional change both at the EU and at the regime level.
• The perception by others of the EU’s behaviour within and impact on key international regimes.
