Economic Interests and European Integration
Organiser: David Howarth, University of Edinburgh
Date: 8 April 2006
Venue: Edinburgh, UK
A study of the influence of economic interests on member state government policies on a range of EU-level policy developments has yet to be conducted. The bulk of research covering economic interests has focused upon their lobbying activities at the EU-level (e.g. Coen, Richardson, Aspinwall and Greenwood). The aim of this workshop is to gather together scholars who have worked on specific economic interests and integration to examine critically the extent to which Frieden’s (2002) economic interests approach to understanding the move to EMU applies more broadly to other policy areas. The workshop will focus upon how economic interests shape government policies, while the operational definitions of the independent, intervening and dependent variables will be left to the workshop participants.
