The EU and Russia after the 2004 Enlargement: Lessons for Cooperation and Integration

Organisers: Ms Maxine David and Prof Chris Flood, University of Surrey

Date: 6 May 2005

Venue: University of Surrey, Guildford, UK

The workshop has two broad aims:

    1. To investigate and discuss the effects of the 2004 enlargement on EU-Russian relations;

    2. To explore possibilities for further research and publication projects between the workshop’s participants.

To these ends, the workshop will explore questions of an empirical and theoretical nature on the EU-Russian relationship.  The three main foci will be:

    1. The extent to which enlargement’s intended and unintended consequences for a neighbouring non-applicant state have influenced EU enlargement and external policies;

    2. Enlargement’s impact upon Russian conceptions of, and policy development towards, the EU;

    3. The validity of various theoretical approaches for exploring systemic level cooperation and the socialising effects of international cooperation.
