European Industrial Policy and Competitiveness: Concepts and Instruments

King's College London, 27 November 1998
Ref: 9808

This conference aims to develop and debate concepts and approaches to European industrial policy and competitiveness in the era of the global economy. A number of European policy experts from the UK and mainland Europe are brought together to discuss and debate business-oriented policy in Europe.

Sessions will be chaired by Dr Thomas Lawton, Lecturer in European Business at the School of Management, Royal Holloway University of London. The contributors come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including law, economics, political science, and management. The roundtable conference has four main objectives. First, to advance a clear and comprehensive conceptualisation of modern industrial policy. Second, to examine the formulation of industrial policy in Europe and to discuss the development of a ‘European industrial competitiveness policy’. Third, to explore and critique the individual instruments of industrial policy. Fourth, lessons will be drawn concerning the nature of European industrial policy and its affect on both national and corporate competitiveness.

The roundtable will operate on an informal basis, with each contributor presenting his/her ideas and arguments for 15 minutes, followed by a 15 minute discussion of the theme and of issues raised for European government and business. The conference will conclude with a roundtable debate on the direction of European industrial policy and competitiveness into the 21st Century.
