Invitation for Proposals

The invitation for proposals is preferably for papers belonging to pre-organised panels (and thank you to those who submitted panel proposals for Portsmouth last year).

In order to achieve optimum coherence of papers in each panel, our preference is, where possible, for you to organise a panel through your own networks. Papers belonging to pre-organised panels are more likely to be accepted as they are usually already in a coherent panel. However Individual paper proposals are also welcome and will be considered.

We encourage contributions from all academic disciplines, including law, economics, geography, history, sociology, social policy and politics. We also encourage papers from established academics, practitioners and well-prepared postgraduate research students.

The diverse nature of 'European Studies' is such that not all subjects will be of interest to all participants - the only way to overcome this, is for each discipline to lobby amongst its own networks, to ensure that it has good representation.

If you are looking for colleagues to help complete a panel, you are welcome to use the UACES email list, the EuroResearch email list or you can try the www.ExpertOnEurope.com website.

Guidelines for Papers and Presentations

UACES is keen to be inclusive and to allow researchers at all levels to present papers. We would also like to see a high standard and quality of presentations.

Please refer to the guidelines for research paper-givers to see what will be required of you.

If you have not presented a paper at a conference before, or even if you have, we strongly recommend that you read the presentation guidelines carefully.

To submit a Proposal

Paper Proposals can be submitted by completing the Paper Proposal form and by sending in your completed proposal as an email attachment.

As part of the proposal, you will be asked to include an abstract (up to 200 words) which should contain a clear summary of your arguments. If your Paper Proposal is accepted, the abstract will appear on this website.

Instructions on how to submit your Proposal are on the form.

Download the Paper Proposal form [48kb Word document]

Please, only one paper proposal/abstract per form.

Finally, please do not send us any paper proposals on behalf of a colleague.

TO CLARIFY:

Panel Proposals

We are looking for panel proposals that are comprised of a Chair and three research papers. Ideally, the Chair should not be presenting one of the research papers, but can be a co-author. If necessary, we can find a Chair for the panel later.

Each paper-giver on the panel should submit a Paper Proposal form - this is identical to the form above.

There is provision on the form for you to identify the other members on the panel, and for a synopsis of the panel to be included.

Panel chairs are not required to fill in any forms, but should ideally, provide a synopsis of the panel, which should be included on one of the paper proposals that form part of the panel.

Please, only one paper proposal/abstract per form - for panels, each paper-giver should submit their own form.

Finally, please do not send us any paper proposals on behalf of a colleague.

TO CLARIFY:

Some other panel related questions:

Can't find a Chair?
If you have three paper-givers, but no Chair, please submit your proposals, and just put 'to be confirmed' in place of the Chairs name; you can always find a Chair after your panel has been accepted, or we can try to find one for you later.

Can we have a Fourth Paper-Giver?
Yes. Although our ideal is to have three papers per panel, we will accept panel proposals with four papers. Just add an extra line to the table in Section 3.

We would like to submit more than one panel
If you and your colleagues would like to submit two or more panels on a particular subject, please give each panel a title that makes it obvious - this will help us schedule the panels so that they are in consecutive research sessions (e.g. 'Security of Energy Supply in Europe I' and 'Security of Energy Supply in Europe II').

Can we have a Discussant for our panel?
Yes. It is entirely optional. We are not looking for panels with discussants, but equally, we have no objection either, if you would like to include someone as a designated Discussant for your panel.

Joint Papers

For joint papers, the Paper Proposal should be completed by the person who is planning to present the paper at the conference. Your co-author(s) will be recognised on the conference programme, but for the purposes of processing the paper proposals, we only need one contact person. We rely on the contact person to keep any co-authors up-to-date.

Timeline

The deadline for submission of Paper Proposals is Friday 14 December 2007.

All proposals will be assessed by a selection committee. Individual Paper Proposals which are accepted will be allocated to a Panel.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by Friday 29 February 2008.

Registration (for both paper-givers and others) will open in March 2008.

Paper-givers are asked to confirm their intention to attend by registering by Monday 19 May 2008. This allows the research programme to be finalised and published to the conference website.

Paper-givers are asked to circulate their papers by Monday 28 July 2008 (ideally) to those on their panel. Please refer to the conference website for contact email addresses.
