Constructive Mésentente? Franco-British Views on Europe's Global Role

Oxford, UK
12-13 May 2006

Ref:0631

A cross-Channel conference organized by the European Studies Centre, Oxford, Maison Francaise d’Oxford and Sciences Po, Paris.

The aim of this symposium is to discuss the EU's role in the world seen from the prism of Franco-British relations. Our discussions will include lessons to be learnt from the war in Iraq, relations with East Asia and China,  relations with the US, and current debates on the future of the EU institutionally and strategically. Fundamentally, we ask whether and to what extent the UK and France can genuinely converge on a vision of Europe as a post-colonial power which has the potential to transcend their respective colonial pasts. With the right mix of people, we hope that this enterprise can move beyond narrative, nostalgia or mutual recrimination towards a constructive debate on prospects for Europe as a global actor and scenarios for the trans-channel contribution (or lack thereof) to such a prospect.

A conference programme, and further details are available from Lars Hoffmann at the University of Oxford.
