Cultural Encounters on the Eastern Frontiers

Bristol, 10-11 June 2005

Ref:0533

The conference explores, from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, current issues of culture contact and conflict in areas where historical regions straddle the present eastern borders of the EU, thereby creating ethnic frontiers, such as Setumaa, Ruthenia or Transylvania. Key problems facing these regions and their respective national governments are discussed against the broader context of EU integration.

A keynote presentation will be made by Elka Tschernokoshewa, Head of European Ethnology, Sorb Institute, Bautzen, and British Academy Visiting Professor, UWE Bristol: “Media Representations of the ‘Other’ and Cultural Encounters: Conceptual Explorations”.  There will also be a paper by Pekka Hakamies (University of Joensuu: “Border experiences: Russians in the former Finnish Karelia”), who is sponsored by the Finnish Institute.
