Sweden and the Euro Referendum: Future Implications and Potential policy Transfers
| Karlstad University, Sweden, 29 September 2003 |
Ref: 0335 |
Sweden’s decision on whether to join the European single currency is of interest to observers all over Scandinavia and the European Union. If the country decides in favour in a public referendum to be held on 14th September, it is likely that the country will become the 13th full member of the euro-zone (estimated for 2006) and possibly the first in the enlarging European Union of twenty-five states. For those countries still outside, most notably the ‘EMU outsiders’ of Denmark and the United Kingdom, and some of the post-2004 new EU Member States, there will be many in those governments that will seek to learn valuable lessons from the Swedish experience of holding a referendum on EMU.
