The Danish 2002 EU Council Presidency: Leading From The Periphery?
| London, 21 March 2003 |
Ref: 0330 |
This prestigious one-day conference to be held at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) in London, evaluates the performance of the Danish EU Council Presidency from June to December 2002. One of the themes of the conference is to place analysis of the Danish EU Council Presidency into the wider context of Danish relations with the European Union. The conference will deliberate whether Denmark’s position as a small state with a reputation for ‘EU reluctance’ and ‘opt outs’ as well as being outside the single currency has constrained its ability to ‘lead’ the Union as EU Council President.
The Programme will include dedicated sessions that explore, amongst other things, the Presidency in the context of general Danish-EU relations as well as a Danish practitioners’ perspective on running the Presidency. There are also other sessions assessing the performance of the Presidency in achieving its policy goals, most notably towards further EU enlargement and Denmark’s perspectives on the single currency today. Provisional speakers include, Dr. Lene Hansen and Professor Ole Wæver (University of Copenhagen), Dr. Lykke Friis (Confederation of Danish Industries) and Dr. Hans Mouritzen (DUPI/Danish Institute of International Studies) as well as a contribution from Dr. Thomas Pedersen (University of Aarhus) and the Danish Ambassador in London. The conference will also form the basis of a published symposium that will feature in the leading international relations academic journal, Co-operation and Conflict, in late 2003.
